Outdoor Safety Tips

Expert Advice for Exploring the Rocky Mountains

We want you to enjoy the mountains of Colorado and stay safe. Here are a few safety tips to help you stay healthy:

Bicycle Safety

  • Always wear a helmet.
  • Obey all traffic laws.
  • Ensure bicycle is in good working condition.
  • Wear sunscreen.
  • Wear proper eye protection.

Ski/Snowboard Safety

  • Wear a helmet.
  • Follow the rules of the slopes.
  • Ski or snowboard to your ability.
  • Wear sunscreen.
  • Wear proper eye protection.


Water Safety

  • Wear a life vest and helmet when rafting.
  • Keep children away from water's edge.
  • Stay off of frozen lakes and ponds unless otherwise posted.


Hiking/Climbing Safety

  • Don't hike or climb alone.
  • Don't hike or climb in severe weather.
  • Seek shelter immediately in cases of severe weather.
  • Inform someone where you will be hiking or climbing and when you will return.


Motor Vehicle Safety

  • Make sure you and your passengers are properly restrained.
  • Obey all traffic laws.
  • Watch for wildlife in mountain areas.
  • Always carry a travel safety kit containing: water, first aid kit, snacks, matches, blankets, road flairs, flashlight, batteries, utility knife or multi-purpose tool and water-resistant clothing.
